Racing Heritage, Reforged in White Gold

The Rolex Daytona’s story begins on the sand of Florida’s Daytona Beach, where Rolex first built its motorsport credentials through a partnership with land-speed racer Sir Malcolm Campbell in the 1930s. That relationship deepened in 1962, when Rolex became official timekeeper of the newly opened Daytona International Speedway, and the following year the brand launched its purpose-built racing chronograph — reference 6239. Marketed briefly under the working name “Le Mans” before Rolex settled on “Daytona” to court the American market, the watch was engineered around a simple brief: give drivers a way to measure elapsed time and calculate average speed via a tachymeter bezel, at a glance, mid-race. Early reception was tepid, and it took the endorsement of actor and amateur racer Paul Newman — whose own “exotic dial” Daytona became one of the most mythologized watches in the world — to transform the model from a working tool into horology’s most coveted chronograph.

The reference pictured here, the 126509, represents the Daytona’s current-generation flagship in 18k white gold, part of the comprehensive redesign Rolex introduced in 2023 to mark the model’s 60th anniversary. Cased at 40mm and roughly 11.9mm thick, it’s built entirely from Rolex’s proprietary white gold alloy — a formulation developed in-house specifically to resist the yellowing that can affect lower-grade white gold over years of wear, keeping the case’s cool, consistent luster intact. True to the reference’s more formal positioning within the Daytona lineup, the 126509 forgoes the black Cerachrom ceramic bezel found on the steel models in favor of a polished white gold tachymeter bezel with engraved graduations, paired with a matching solid white gold Oyster bracelet and Oysterlock folding clasp. The black dial, as seen here, carries the familiar three-subdial chronograph layout, applied white gold hour markers, and Chromalight luminescence for legibility in any light.

At the heart of the watch sits the Caliber 4131, Rolex’s in-house automatic chronograph movement introduced alongside the 2023 redesign and a meaningful step up from its predecessor. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour across 47 jewels, it’s certified as a Superlative Chronometer — accurate to within 2 seconds a day, twice the tolerance of standard COSC certification — and its Chronergy escapement, paired with a magnetism-resistant Parachrom hairspring, delivers a substantially improved 72-hour power reserve, up from the 48 hours of the outgoing Caliber 4130. Solid gold construction pushes the total weight to roughly 200 grams on the wrist, a tactile reminder that this is very much the Daytona’s precious-metal expression rather than its lightweight steel sibling — racing pedigree recast, quite literally, in solid gold.
