Born on the Track: The Omega Speedmaster Racing Co-Axial Chronometer

The Speedmaster’s story starts with cars, not the moon. Omega introduced the original CK2915 in 1957 as a dedicated sports and racing chronograph — years before NASA ever put one on an astronaut’s wrist. That racing pedigree resurfaced formally in the late 1990s, when Omega brought Formula 1 drivers Michael and Ralph Schumacher on as ambassadors and built a line of Speedmasters wearing bright, motorsport-inspired dials and accents. The Speedmaster Racing seen here, in grey with yellow highlights, is a direct descendant of that lineage — a watch that wears its stopwatch-at-the-racetrack origins openly, rather than the more famous Moonwatch’s quiet, utilitarian black.

This 40mm stainless steel model pairs a grey dial with yellow accents beneath a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, with a date window, small seconds sub-dial, 30-minute recorder, and 12-hour recorder — each of the black sub-dials finished with a textured “Clous de Paris” pattern. The matte black aluminium bezel carries the tachymetric scale that’s been a Speedmaster signature since the 1957 original, letting a wearer calculate speed over a measured distance using the chronograph function — the same mechanism racing drivers and their teams once relied on trackside. Here it’s presented on a black rubber strap, reinforcing the sport-first character of the design.

Powering the watch is Omega’s Co-Axial calibre 3330, built around the co-axial escapement George Daniels developed and Omega brought to production — a design that reduces friction between moving parts compared to a traditional Swiss lever escapement, meaning less wear, longer intervals between servicing, and steadier accuracy over time. The movement delivers a 60-hour power reserve and is rated to an accuracy of 0 to +5 seconds per day, and the chronograph itself uses a column-wheel mechanism, prized among watchmakers for the smoother, more precise feel it gives the chronograph pushers compared to cheaper cam-actuated designs. Each movement is chronometer-certified to the ISO 3159 standard, tested by an accredited independent Swiss laboratory to a precision requirement of -4/+6 seconds per day.

What sets the Speedmaster Racing apart from its Moonwatch sibling isn’t pedigree — both trace back to the same 1957 original — but personality. Where the Moonwatch is deliberately austere, built for legibility in a vacuum, the Racing leans into color and energy: the yellow accents, the checkered-flag-inspired dial detailing, the sense of a watch built for a pit lane rather than a spacewalk. It’s the Speedmaster’s other half — proof the collection’s racing roots run just as deep as its lunar ones.
